Rev. Wylie published his first of three volumes in 1886. The first traces Scottish history from the beginning, or Prehistoric age to early Christianity. This volume is published with Rev. Wylie's English of the time and a good Oxford dictionary is said to be helpful. I did not find this to be the case. don't think that this is a tome to be consumed at once, but rather studied ove the course of months. The second and third volumes bring us up to date if we lived in 1286. He died before he could inform us about Braveheart.Product details

History of the Scottish nation Volume 1 J A 18081890 Wylie 9781176690301 Books Reviews
This information is from the very beginning of the history of the part of the island that became Scotland. It was very interesting to me to learn what happened in the beginning years. I will now go on to read the second Volume which starts about the year 800 and then to Volume Three.
I am only on Ch 3 of kindle version but there are already several instances of entire lines of words run together. Disappointed.
I have been scouring the tables of content which summarize well the perspectives of these volumes. I would like to know if the fusions of words were in the original printing . . . .
I am appreciative of fact that this book is not just a history but an artifact of history it is an artifact that preserves a self-portrait and grasp of myth of origin from the 19th century and a particular tradition, namely the 'old light' Free Church tradition . . . . And it makes ever so clear that, at some point in time, some Scots were clear that they were Irish in origin and that Ireland was the homeland . . . and not a foreign land . . . .I appreciate the perspective because my family's Scots born when this book was published were convinced that they were not Irish (when the DNA haplo group is old Irish Type 3) . . and many ethnic Irish do not seem to recognize that Scots Irish are not just Scots transplanted to Ireland but a certain group of ethnic Irish called Scots.
I see these volumes as telling a grand story--the story of origin--that was held by probably more Scots than just the author of this 'history.' So this is much like time-travel for the acculturated Scots of the diaspora and Scots who have been anglicized since union w/ England, a trip that will explain a lot of history.
By the bye, one of the reviewers does not know that 'corn' is what Scots call barley. I not think the Rev Wiley was inebriated.
The man was on weed when he wrote this ,he must have just visited a locale scotch distillery. I did not know that prehistoric scots had corn. They must have sailed to the americas long before anyone else. I will not waste my time with the remaining two volumes.
Txt is clear and concise. Written so it is easy to follow. Look forward to reading vol. 2. Recommend this book to those seeking to learn more about our Scottish heritage.
